Have an iPhone 3G?  Can’t wait for your new iPhone 4?  Can’t afford one?  Can’t wait until the official release of the iPhone OS 4 (aka IOS4)?  Follow the instructions in this post to turn your iPhone 3G into a poor man’s iPhone 4 without spending a single cent.

  • Download and install iTunes 9.2 from Apple.
  • Download the Golden Master Firmware Candidate  IOS4 (i.e. the final copy developers get before the official release).  NOTE: You need to be a developer to officially download it from Apple and cannot downgrade to an earlier version after installing.  If you are not a developer and like to take risks like downloading and installing firmware from questionable web sites, click here.
  • Install the firmware through iTunes (Hold the SHIFT key while clicking the “Restore” button in the iPhone tab in iTunes)
  • Download and run Redsn0w from here.  Follow the instructions to install Cydia and Enable Multitasking and Wallpaper.  NOTE:  This is jailbreaking your iPhone.  Keep in mind the performance, stability, and warranty/support impacts before jailbreaking.
  • Install the free Cydia app Cycorder to be able to record video
  • Install the free App Store app Amazon Kindle to be able to read e-books
